Decision 2008…
…should I get bangs?
Okay readers, I need your help on this one! Next Tuesday I am getting my hair done and I’m getting the works…haircut and color AND I’m in the mood to get a bit of a new look. I’m planning on going blonder (Reese Witherspoon’s hair color is my plan) and I’m toying with the idea of getting bangs.
Now, the last time I had bangs was 10 years ago and I’m talking about sophomore year of high school, full on, curl them with your curling iron, did I mention I have braces, bangs. Something after I painstakingly grew them out, I promised myself that I would never ever have bangs again. And I haven’t, not really anyway. I’ve had side swept bangs over the years, which don’t count, but I haven’t done full on bangs since high school.
But, now bangs have come full circle and they are super chic, super in style and have been looking super amazing on everyone in Hollywood. Reese Witherspoon, my style and beauty muse, just happened to have one of the best set of bangs last season. She has since given them up (I personally miss the long hair with bangs), but I’m thinking about picking them up where she left off. My length won’t change much, but I am thinking about adding some Reese Witherspoon bangs.
So, you have until next Tuesday to either convince me to keep my vow from 10th grade or to take the plunge and cut myself a sassy set of bangs. Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions! xo

I say go for it! You already have the side swept bangs so you are halfway there. Plus, knowing how crafty you are, if you end up not liking the bangs, you will be able to make it work by clipping them, etc. You always look good anyways!

Oh Nadia…how you flatter!

Oh-KAY! I can offer lots of bangs insight, because I have a high forehead (yeah, it’s my five-head, whatevs, I rock it) and have had bangs in various incarnations since I was 16 and chopped in my first side-sweep. First, be sure to take your face shape into account. Bangs put the spotlight on areas of your face that previously faded into the background… google some pics of Christina Ricci with bangs and without, and you’ll see what I mean. Also, apparently your forehead size makes a difference in whether bangs will work for you or not, so talk to your stylist. Now, regarding specific examples… I cut in blunt bangs once a few years ago and they were a horror… I looked like a schoolgirl. However, when I tried them again last summer, I looooved them. The difference was that the second time around, they were cut in a slight curve with longer pieces on the sides, which is MUCH more flattering if you go for blunt bangs. Drawbacks of blunt bangs include the fact that you will need to trim them every two weeks or so, or you will look shaggy (and will have a hard time seeing), and they are a living hell to grow out when you’re over them. I’m currently growing mine back out into the long sidesweep that a lot of girls have (and which I have had in the past), because they are easier to hide on days you don’t want to wear bangs, and they grow out more gracefully than blunt bangs. If you want to try shorter bangs, what I would recommend, from my past experience, is cutting them shorter, but in such a way that they still sweep to the side. See Reese up there? See how there’s a sort of no-bangs zone over her right eye, and then more short bangs pieces over her right temple? Basically, you would skip the pieces that fall over the temple. Think of it this way: Don’t cut any hair that you couldn’t brush over to the side easily during the growing-out process. By cutting them this way, if you don’t like them or get over them in a week, they’re a LOT easier to grow out, especially if you don’t like a lot of layering around your face. And if you decide you love them and your lifestyle suits the upkeep, then you can go back later and get them cut in a more blunt style that goes across the whole forehead. Also bear in mind you can get clip-in bangs these days that let you flirt with the style without committing. Sorry this comment is so long but I hope it helped in some way!

Hi Becca- Thank you for all the advice! I’m for sure avoiding blunt bangs…I know those are a huge pain to grow out and I wouldn’t do my part with the upkeep. I think I’ll go with your advice on keeping my bangs longer on the sides, so if I do hate them it won’t be too hard to try the growing out process. I have a typical heartshape face which usually fares well with bangs, so hopefully everything will turn out good. So far it looks like readers are leaning towards me trying out bangs…there will be pictures for sure after next Tuesday!
